Marriage and Family: Responding to Christmas - The Shepherds

December 21, 2010

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child. and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (Luke 2:8-20)

Our remarriage, the salvation of our son, Christmas, the birth of Jesus, the obedience and righteousness of Joseph, the grace of God upon Mary..it all reminds us that God is an amazing, faithful and trustworthy God.  HE really is faithful and true.  He is faithful to HIS promises and true to HIS Word!  And this is exactly what the Shepherds found out when they arrived in Bethlehem!  Luke 2:20 says all the things were just as they had been told.

This is exactly what we need to be reminded of today.  In the midst of a tough economy.  In the midst of crazy schedules with too many demands, too many places to go, too many people to see, too many unanswered questions and too many uncertain days ahead...isn't it awesome to be reminded that GOD IS FAITHFUL to what HE has told us!  He was faithful to put our family back together and he will be faithful to you and whatever you are facing.  The scripture says the Shepherds found Mary and Joseph and the baby ... just as they had been told!  You see, God was faithful to his word to the shepherds...and he will be faithful to HIS WORD to you!  So, in view of God's Word and God's faithfulness let's look at how the Shepherds responded to Christmas:

First...they HURRIED - this Christmas before you hurry to open your presents, how about hurring into in the PRESENCE of Christ!  Turn your eyes, your heart, your mind toward Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened.  The Savior of the World has come.  God has shown himself faithful...the good news is here for all mankind...a Savior has been born...he is the Messiah...he is the LORD! Hurry to the Word of God and find HIS faithfulness for you, your life, your situation. Remember, if you seek him, you will find him if you seek him with all of your heart.

Second...they spread the word - this Christmas, tell someone about Jesus. Spread the word about what He means to you, what he has done for you, how he has worked in your life.  Spread the word about the "too good to be true news" of the Gospel.  We have hope, we have a future, we have a Savior and he is Christ the Lord!

Lastly...they glorified and praised - this Christmas, slow down, pause for a moment, take a specific time and make sure you glorify and praise God!  Not just for what he has done, but for who he is - remember no matter what you are facing...HE IS FAITHFUL. and HE deserves to be glorified through our lives and worshipped through our praise!

So how will you respond this Christmas?  Will you be like the Shepherds and hurry to find Christ and be in His presence?  Will you spread the word and tell someone about Jesus? You know it will be the greatest present you will ever give someone? And, will you take a moment, slow down and praise HIM? The Shepherds certainly did...but what about you?

fully surrendered,
